That is what a partial load move is for. You pay for the portion you actually move instead of a whole truck you do not need.
What Partial Load Moving Actually Means
A partial load, sometimes called a small load move, is any move that does not fill a truck. Instead of pricing the job as a full household relocation, the mover prices it around what you are actually moving: how much there is, how long it takes, and how far it goes.
The practical difference for you is simple. A full house move is priced around a truck and a crew for a day. A partial load move is priced around your inventory. If you are moving one room, you should be paying closer to one room.
When a Partial Load Move Makes Sense
- Studios and one bedroom apartments. Usually well under a full truck, even with furniture.
- A single room. A home office, a nursery, a guest room being moved to a new place.
- A few large items. A bedroom set, a sofa and a dining table, appliances, a piano on its own.
- Downsizing. Moving into somewhere smaller and taking only what fits.
- Clearing a storage unit. Moving the contents to a home, or the other way around.
- College and first apartments. Enough to matter, nowhere near a truckload.
- Second homes. Furnishing a place in Champions Gate, Celebration or Davenport without shipping a whole household.
When It Is Not the Right Call
We would rather tell you this up front than surprise you later. A partial load is not the cheaper option if you are actually moving a full three bedroom house. Once your inventory reaches a certain size you are paying for most of a truck anyway, and a standard move is simpler and usually costs less. If your list is longer than you thought, we will say so when we quote it.
How Partial Load Moves Are Priced
Small moves are quoted on the work involved rather than a flat household rate. The things that change the number:
- How much you are moving. The single biggest factor. An accurate item list gets you an accurate price.
- Large or awkward items. A piano, a safe, a treadmill or an oversized sofa takes more crew and more time than its box count suggests.
- Access at both ends. Stairs, elevators, long carries from the truck and tight parking all add time.
- Distance. Across Orlando is a different job from across the state.
- Packing. If you want us to pack, that is quoted separately so you can see it on its own.
Give us a real inventory, even a rough one, and we will give you a real number. Guessing low at the quote stage helps nobody, because the truck still has to fit what is actually there.
How to Hire Partial Load Movers Without Getting Burned
Small moves attract the least careful operators in this industry, so it is worth being picky even when the job is small.

- Get it in writing. A written estimate that lists what is being moved, not a number over the phone with no detail behind it.
- Ask how they price small moves. If a company only quotes full day rates, a one room move will cost you more than it should.
- Be wary of large deposits. A reputable local mover does not need a big payment before anything happens.
- Read recent reviews. Not the star rating alone, the last few months of comments.
